Custom T-Shirts in Canada: Everything You Need to Know About Branded Apparel

A custom t-shirt is the closest thing branded apparel has to a sure bet. People wear them on weekends, to the gym, around the house, and to work if the dress code allows it. Compare that to a flyer nobody reads and the appeal is obvious.

The trouble is that ordering shirts sounds simple right up until you start. Then come the questions about fabric weights, print methods, minimums, sizing, and why one quote came back at seven dollars a shirt and another at twenty two. Here is a plain explanation of how custom t-shirts work in Canada and what actually affects your final invoice.

What Kinds of Custom T-Shirts Can You Choose From?

More than most people realize. The shirt you pick matters as much as the print on it, because fabric decides how it feels, how it fits, and how long it survives.

  • Budget shirts are the workhorse of the industry. Thinner cotton or a cotton poly blend, low cost per unit, perfect when you need volume for a fun run, a festival tent, or a giveaway pile. A range of affordable basic t-shirts covers most of these needs without wrecking a budget.
  • Heavier cotton shirts are what you order when people will keep the shirt. Softer hand feel, better drape, colours hold up longer. Staff uniforms, retail merch, and client gifts all belong here. If you are comparing weights and cuts, the selection of 100% cotton t-shirts is the place to start.
  • Performance shirts use moisture wicking polyester or a poly blend. Anyone moving in them will notice the difference. Sports teams, tournament shirts, trades crews working through July, warehouse staff. Browse the athletic and performance t-shirts if the shirt needs to handle sweat.
  • Long sleeve shirts deserve more attention than they get in this country. Half our calendar is cool, and a long sleeve tee works as a standalone shirt in spring and fall and as a layer under a hoodie in January. Teams often order custom long sleeve t-shirts alongside their short sleeve run so staff have something for both seasons.

Screen Printing or Something Else? Which Method Should You Pick?

Four common options, and the right one depends on your quantity and your design.

  • Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh screen, one screen per colour. It is the cheapest method at volume and the ink holds up beautifully. The catch is the setup charge per colour, which makes it a poor fit for a six shirt order or a design with a photographic gradient.
  • Direct to garment sprays ink into the fabric like an inkjet printer. No screens, no colour limits, so full colour artwork and small runs work fine. Cost per shirt stays flat whether you order ten or two hundred, which means it loses to screen printing once you scale up. Works best on cotton.
  • Heat transfer vinyl cuts your design from coloured vinyl and presses it on. Excellent for numbers, names, and one off shirts. Not built for complex artwork.
  • Embroidery stitches the design in thread. It costs more, but for polos, caps, and anything that needs to read as professional, nothing else comes close.

If you are unsure, tell your supplier your quantity and send the artwork. The method should follow from those two things.

How Much Do Custom T-Shirts Cost in Canada?

Ballpark figures, before decoration:

  • Basic blank tees usually land between four and eight dollars
  • Mid weight cotton runs roughly eight to fifteen dollars
  • Performance and premium fashion fits climb from fifteen to twenty five dollars and up

Then add printing. Expect a one time screen setup charge for each colour in your design, plus a per shirt print cost. A second print location, say a back print or a sleeve hit, adds cost again. Rush orders carry a premium.

The single biggest lever is quantity. Setup charges get spread across your order, so a hundred shirts often costs far less per unit than twenty five. If you know you will need more shirts in a few months, ordering together saves real money.

What Is the Minimum Order for Custom T-Shirts?

It depends entirely on method. Screen printing minimums often start around twenty four pieces, sometimes twelve. Direct to garment and vinyl can handle much smaller runs, occasionally a single shirt.

Sizes count toward your total, which surprises people. Twenty four shirts spread across small through 2XL is still twenty four shirts as far as minimums go, as long as they are the same style and the same print.

How Long Does It Take?

Plan on two to three weeks from artwork approval to delivery for a standard order. Multiple colours, several print locations, or specialty garments push that further. Rush turnaround exists but you will pay for it, and it depends on the blanks being in stock.

Two Canadian realities worth planning around. Shipping to remote or northern communities adds transit days nobody can compress. And September through November is the busiest stretch of the year, so holiday orders need a head start.

What Artwork Do You Need to Send?

Vector files, ideally .ai, .eps, or a properly built .pdf. Vector art scales to any size without going fuzzy, which matters when your logo needs to print eleven inches wide across a chest.

If all you have is a JPG or a screenshot pulled off your website, say so upfront. Most suppliers can redraw it, sometimes for a small fee. What you want to avoid is discovering the resolution problem the day before production.

Send your brand colours as PMS codes rather than describing them. "Our blue" means nothing to a press operator.

How Do You Get Sizing Right for a Group Order?

Collect sizes in writing before you order. A quick form beats guessing every time.

North American sizing is fairly consistent, but cuts are not. A modern retail fit runs noticeably slimmer than a classic boxy tee, and unisex sizing tends to fit women differently than a ladies cut does. Ask for a sizing chart specific to the exact style you picked, not a generic one.

When people cannot be surveyed, order a bell curve. Roughly a quarter medium, a third large, a quarter XL, and the remainder split between small and 2XL is a reasonable default. Add a few extras. There is always someone who was on vacation when the form went around.

Who Orders Custom T-Shirts, and What For?

Just about everyone at some point. Breweries and coffee shops selling merch at the counter. Contractors putting crews in matching shirts. Non profits kitting out volunteers for a fundraising walk. Hockey associations, dance studios, family reunions, and every summer festival in the country.

Smaller companies often get the most out of them because a good shirt turns a customer into a walking billboard for years. Our guide to promotional products for small businesses breaks down how to fit apparel into a modest marketing budget.

What Should You Look For in a Supplier?

Someone who asks about your use case before quoting, sends a digital proof before printing, and tells you honestly when your deadline will not work. A supplier who agrees to every timeline is either guessing or planning to rush your job through.

Ask about stock availability, since a great shirt is useless if the colour you want is backordered until spring. Ask what happens if a garment shows up defective.
